The extensive reconstruction of St. Wenceslas Home in Stará Boleslav is proceeding according to schedule. Even complications with the roof truss statics caused by a previous fire have not threatened the planned completion of construction in December of this year.
St. Wenceslas Home is a unique facility that has provided dignified accommodation for aging clergy and other church workers for decades. Since August last year, it has been undergoing a complete transformation to meet all current standards for quality residential social services. The reconstruction will also enable more energy-efficient and economically efficient operation of the building.
„Demolition work in the home’s interior is almost finished, we are working intensively on installing electrical, water and heating systems, and at the same time we are beginning work on repairing the building’s facade,“ lists the progress of construction work Stanislav Fiala, who oversees the construction progress for the Caritas of the Archdiocese of Prague. „The repair of the historic roof truss and installation of new roofing is also largely complete.“
It was precisely the roof trusses of the Boleslav home that brought unexpected problems. „During construction we discovered remnants of a local fire that damaged the statics of large load-bearing beams on the building’s top floor,“ Fiala reports. The complications were successfully managed thanks to cooperation with a specialized carpentry company that specializes in historic and heritage-valuable carpentry work.
Given that this is a heritage-protected building, moreover in the city center, in the middle of a historic quiet zone, the reconstruction must be approached carefully. Preservation of the historical and cultural quality of the baroque building is ensured by the heritage care department, with which Caritas closely cooperates throughout the construction and its preparation.
St. Wenceslas Home is one of the historic landmarks of Stará Boleslav and significantly shapes the character of the city. The repair is therefore perceived positively by the surroundings. „It happens that passersby contact craftsmen and construction representatives with questions about the content and purpose of the work, and last but not least, they are interested in the completion date,“ confirms Stanislav Fiala.
Construction will be completed in December of this year. After that, it will be necessary to equip the building for the needs of clients who will move from temporary accommodation in Prague’s Třeboradice and Dejvice to the new spaces of St. Wenceslas Home during 2026.
